In May 2021, SmarterLite Group’s Chief Technology Officer Zoran Ovuka, was one of only four invited speakers on the topic of innovative road safety technology at Roads Australia’s Spotlight on Safety forum in Brisbane, Queensland.

With presentations by Neil Scales OBE, Director General, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland, Gabby O’Neil, the Head of Australia’s Office of Road Safety, and Rob McInerney, the Chief Executive of global road safety charity, the International Road Assessment Program, Zoran was in prestigious company addressing the audience about SmarterLite’s revolutionary night-time road safety technology.

Zoran’s presentation identified the scale of night-time road crashes in Australia and how photoluminescent road lighting can assist road managers with reducing risk without the capital and maintenance costs of traditional road lighting. Zoran’s presentation then gave two examples – a reflective and photoluminescent road sign, and the use of photoluminescent linemarking on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road. Photoluminescence enables solar powered to be used for road lighting without the costs and constraints of new roadside poles for road lighting, solar panels and batteries.

Zoran’s research into commercial-grade photoluminescence for indoor and outdoor lines and signs has extended for nearly 20 years. His innovation has enabled wasteful electric-battery exit signs in buildings to be replaced with fully code-compliant photoluminescent exit signs. Now he is extending that technology to safety on Australia’s roads and more general workplace occupational safety signage.

SmarterLite is grateful for the opportunity provided by Roads Australia to speak at its event, the follow-up interest from attendees and for grant funding support from the Australian Government’s Road Safety Innovation Fund (Round 1).

Safety Path and OmniGrip Direct are divisions of SmarterLite Group. OmniGrip Direct provides Safety Path photoluminescent lines and signs to the roads sector across Australia.
