Photoluminescent Linemarking & Pavement Marking

Smarterlite’s linemarking and pavement markings absorb and store daylight and electric light. When light levels fall, the Smarterlite linemarking and pavement marking emits the stored light creating a line or marking with enhanced visibility compared to standard painted lines. Available in pre-form or extrusion.

Smarterlite’s linemarking and pavement markings absorb and store daylight and electric light. When light levels fall, the Smarterlite linemarking and pavement marking emits the stored light creating a line or marking with enhanced visibility compared to standard painted lines. Available in pre-form, paint and thermoplastic versions.

Smarterlite’s coatings are available for bitumen, asphalt, concrete and common building surfaces, and can be used indoors and outdoors. They are available as Smarterlite WhiteLiteTM and Smarterlite PureLiteTM, each with differing degrees of whiteness in daylight and the resultant brightness of the line at night. Smarterlite Thermolite Purelite is our highest performing line available for use on public roads.

Smarterlite linemarking should only be used on roads and paths that are dark, with no electric or ambient light, and where headlights do not directly illuminate the direction of travel. Example road locations are small radius curves and intersections, and kerbs of raised traffic islands on side roads. Smarterlite lines for road applications contain high quality retro-reflective glass beads so that they reflect light when directly illuminated by headlights.

Smarterlite linemarking is ideal for off-road paths including footpaths and shared paths, where there is no lighting such as paths along creeks and rivers and through large parks. Smarterlite lines will help people get safely home, no matter whether they’re walking or riding.

A significant advantage of Smarterlite’s lines and markings on roads is that it is more visible than ordinary linemarking in dark conditions, and it is significantly cheaper to install and operate than electric road lighting. There’s no electricity emissions, and no roadside poles that become new roadside hazards. Smarterlite linemarking gives road agencies, road managers and Councils an option for affordably treating dark high-risk roads without the lengthy and costly design, construction and operating costs of electric road lighting.

In daylight and bright moonlight, Smarterlites linemarking and pavement marking looks and functions like ordinary lines, but in dark conditions it emits stored light enhancing its visibility and the consequential safety benefits for road users, workers and the public. In an outdoor application, laboratory testing shows that PureLite will achieve 100 mcd/m2 at 1.5 hours, reducing to 10 mcd/m2 after 12 hours (test certificates available for customers). When used on roads, the headlights of passing vehicles may re-energise the Smarterlite linemarking and pavement marking, incrementally extending the longevity of the enhanced visibility line.

Smarterlite’s linemarking is available as a pre-form thermoplastic line and pavement marking for roads, paths and car parks, and a hot and cold-applied systems for standard linemarking equipment.

Smarterlite lines provide the benchmark in photoluminescent performance. Indoors, when tested in accordance with ASTM E2073-10 input light at 4,000K of 54 lux for 60 minutes, the expected persistance of Smarterlite PureLite is 30mcd/m2 at 90 minutes and 2 mcd/m2 at 12 hours. Outdoors, when tested with an input light of 82,000 lux at 5,600K (ie sunlight) for 60 minutes, the expected persistance of Smarterlite PureLite is 100mcd/m2 at 90 minutes and 10 mcd/m2 at 12 hours.

Smarterlite's on-road lines uses APAS approved bases that are produced by major paint manufacturers, with Smarterlite's unique photoluminescent pigments added to achieve its unique performance in the dark.

Smarterlite's lines can incorporate high-performing retro-reflective glass beads so that when directly illuminated by headlights they reflect light similar to ordinary linemarking. Please specify this when requesting a quotation.

Smarterlite photoluminescent lines are used in buildings where there is a risk that a power failure will leave workers stranded in a high-risk or stressful environment in the dark. The period of darkness might be short, until back-up power restores lighting, or of much longer-duration. Whether a short or long period of darkness, photoluminescent lines will provide essential wayfinding to guide people around hazards to an exit or safety refuge.

Smarterlite photoluminescent lines work in the dark. On roads, this is where the direction of travel is not where a vehicle's headlights are pointing. Examples include small radius curves (sharp bends) on winding roads, and at intersections where vehicles are turning. It can be used for lines, pavement markings and to coat kerbs on raised islands to reduce risk and assist drivers, riders and pedestrians.
