The Vivacity LED Safety Tactile (TGSI) is designed to reduce the number of crashes and injuries at traffic light controlled intersections, resulting from distracted or sight-impaired pedestrians walking on to a road in front of vehicles. International research has found significant reductions in crashes involving pedestrians at night where the LED Safety Tactile Blocks are installed. The LED Safety Tactile can also be installed at zebra crossings to increase the visibility of the crossing to pedestrians and drivers, and other high-risk pedestrian locations such as ramps, steps and escalators.

 

The Vivacity LED Safety Tactile has been designed for Australian conditions, including higher brightness to overcome sunglare and dimming at night. Their design allows for easy maintenance by road agencies and their traffic signal contractors. They have been strengthened to allow for static and dynamic wheel loads arising from motorised street-sweeping and cleaning vehicles used in major cities.

 

When installed at traffic lights and signalised pedestrian crossings, the LED Tactiles are connected to the traffic lights for power and synchronisation with the traffic light’s control system. They can also be linked to other control mechanisms, including automated or electrically controlled gates, or standalone in a flashing or steady light mode in other applications.

 

The Vivacity LED Safety Tactile is category P5 rated for slip resistance and because it is internally LED illuminated, luminance contrast is not an issue and they can be seen by vision impaired people. The Vivacity LED Safety Tactile brings the vital road safety message of walk/don’t walk to where the pedestrian is standing. Vivacity LED Safety Tactiles can be installed at any location where power is available. Connected to traffic lights they change colour to match the signal’s light phases. At unsignalised crossings, they can be a steady or flashing yellow to draw attention to the location of the crossing. The control box can receive a wide range of signals enabling the tactiles to be installed at tram stops, train stations, railway level crossings, ferry terminals, and shopping centre and train station escalators.

The control box of the Vivacity LED Safety Tactiles is designed to prevent any malfunction, should it ever happen, affecting the operation of the connected traffic lights. It is a ‘one-way’ signal from the lights to the control box for the LED Safety Tactiles.

The Vivacity LED Safety Tactiles are IP rated and waterproof, with their design including submersion testing. Their cabling is designed to operate in wet conditions.

The Vivacity LED Safety Tactiles have a replaceable top unit enabling a damaged tactile to be replaced in minutes by a suitably trained maintenance crew.

The LED Safety Tactiles are installed in dense urban areas in Melbourne and Bendigo, and a major regional highway at Trafalgar. When set into kerb ramps they are often fully or partially obscured to approaching vehicles. When compared to the multiple red, yellow and green traffic light lanterns facing drivers, the LED Safety Tactiles are less prominent. Their brightness can also be set to automatically dim at a specific time each evening.

Luminance contrast is a comparison of the amount of light reflected from two difference surfaces. Because the Vivacity LED Safety Tactile emits its own light (and doesn't reflect light so as to be seen), luminance contrast does not apply.

The Vivacity LED Tactile emits light that ensures maximum contrast with the surrounding pavement. Its brightness can be adjusted to maintain that contrast when installed in bright sunlit locations.
