Safer Pedestrians in Bendigo with Vivacity LED Tactiles (TGSI)

Vivacity LED Safety Tactile in Bendigo

Vivacity LED Safety Tactiles (TGSI) are LED TGSI that were installed by OmniGrip Direct in the main shopping precinct of Bendigo, a city in regional Victoria. The T-intersection is at the end of Bendigo Mall, adjacent to a busy bus interchange. The project was funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments.

Regional Roads Victoria said "LED tactile paving is a ground surface treatment that changes colour between red and green with the traffic lights, providing a clear signal for pedestrians when it’s safe to cross the road. It’s easier to see and will prevent pedestrians from walking into incoming traffic, assist distracted pedestrians or people with low vision."

The installation followed from earlier installations in Melbourne's Central Business District, Dunedin in New Zealand and Trafalgar in regional Victoria.

“Any initiative like this that makes traffic lights easier to see for those with low vision are definitely a welcomed idea and would be supported by Vision Australia. This is a great improvement for those living with low vision and we welcome the introduction of these into the regions. For people with low vision and who are short-sighted, they would really benefit from the indicators.”
